The Broadcast Engineer will support and perform maintenance on broadcast systems and operations at Churchill Downs Racetrack. This role is responsible for assisting in the delivery of reliable and high-quality simulcast broadcast, providing onsite support for 3rd party media, and providing an excellent in-venue AV experience for the enjoyment of domestic and international fans of Churchill Downs Racetrack and The Kentucky Derby.

Essential Duties

Includes, but is not limited to, the following: 

  • Performing broadcast maintenance duties: 
    • Broadcast systems support and maintenance
    • Installation of equipment and associated connectivity
    • Modification of existing hardware, systems, and infrastructure o Equipment repairs
    • Technical support for in-house TV headend facility
    • Discuss technical issues with vendor tech support 
    • Provide support for broadcast events:
      • Duties as required for successful live and recorded broadcasts for multiple Churchill networks
      • QC of all signals including multiple transmission formats
      • Support media partners o Perform operational duties (shading cameras, audio, camera operator, etc.) when needed 

Venue support:

  • Work to maintain and expand in venue media connectivity (fiber, triax, audio, and network) –including testing, documentation, and repairs
  • Provide support, as needed, for large scale venue driven projects 
  • Assist media partners with connectivity and setup issues around the venue

Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities 

  • Engineering or technical school education in electronics 
  • 3+ years’ experience in broadcast production 
  • Experience working in a live broadcast environment 
  • Broadcast studio experience 
  • Functional understanding of the technical requirements of a broadcast operation 
  • Computer software skills

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with broadcast signal routers
  • Knowledge of broadcast networks 
  • Working knowledge of audio system and various networks 
  • Experience working with fiber optic transmission 
  • Knowledge of video and audio formats 
  • Soldering skills 
  • Ability to read and interpret Autocad drawings 
  • Practical experience operating broadcast equipment (switchers, camera shading, record/playback, audio consoles, graphics) 
  • Experience working as part of a live broadcast production team as well as an engineering team 
  • Driven to achieve technical quality & efficiency 
  • Highly detail oriented, self-motivated, able to multi-task and work independently or as a team member 
  • Above-average organizational skills 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Creative problem solver

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Thoroughbred Horse Racing industry 
  • Large venue work history 
  • Broadcast work for a large scale media event

Working Conditions

  • Weekend and evening work required during live racing meets.
  • Working conditions include inside and outside responsibilities.
  • Ability to maneuver around the racetrack and withstand hot/cold conditions.
